:: Tears of the Moon ::

If my life could be a song, it'd be Plumb's Real, which starts off with "Look at me, twenty-three, beautiful sight to see tonight." Which is, incidentally, my age last year. But the lyrics still apply. Do I get life half the time? I don't. I'm just struggling to get by. In the meantime, I write, I read, I observe. This journal is what it feels like.

I've been reading blogs and online journal entries and I realized something.

Intelligent people are hotter, infinitely cooler than physically attractive ones.

In my case, once I find them cute, then fine. Once I discover they actually have brains, I'm floored, and they become cool.

Take Ali, for example. She's always been a girl I clicked with the moment I got to know her. We both have a liking for Gaiman comics, and Anne Rice. One time I asked her about her tongue ring and she said that since the tongue had squamous cells, then the hole in her tongue healed quicker than any other wound.

And since I got what she meant, I totally appreciate her for it.

Yes, I'm a geek, I know. I discriminate on the basis of vocabulary and bandwidth. But people with bandwidth and vocabulary are much more interesting, you know?

I think I also discovered the trick to get people interested: ask questions to make them talk about themselves.

Not such a eureka moment, but hey, it works. And since I'm a naturally curious person by nature, it's never a hardship to ask. I only just realized that I do it subconciously. What's funny is that when people start asking about me, I find it hard to talk. Weird.

Ye cute commented on my pants. He actually said "nice pants". Whew. I'm glad. They new. I was thinking maybe they looked a bit like they stayed wet too long on the line and got rust stains. Apparently, he liked, which means that either he was 1)just being polite, or 2)he was checking it out and it really looked nice. Either way, it's all good.

So, what's up?

I'm so fucking tired. The week's been draining, and the next one seems even more so. Work-wise.

I'm drained. I want to write, but I can't. I think I need to get away and be alone at some coffeeshop one of these days to get my thoughts in order. In any case, I got my writing bag with me if I were caught somewhere quiet.

I was thinking of how come I've become The Oracle in my friends' lives. First, I've never had a love life, so WHY do people think I'm worth asking? Apparently, they take me seriously. Leah once said that I gave her advice that she ignored, and she broke her heart in the process.

What do I fear most? Seriously?

I don't want to hurt someone who loves me. It's the worst thing. It doesn't matter if I love them as much (or more?) as they love me, just that I don't want to break that piece of glass. I don't want to cause anyone pain. Although I know I can be very mean.

Quite a contradiction, eh?

Caught the cute before he went home. I'd like to think that it's all for me, regardless if he likes me back or not. At this point, it doesn't matter if he likes me back or not. Just as long as I get to catch him sometimes and it makes me feel giddy.

I guess I like having a crush, but seriously pursuing it is another matter altogether, you know? I haven't felt that with anybody so much that I'd pine over the guy.

A recap of my weekend:

High points:

1. Went to the 2nd Philippine Comic Con. Hobbits, elves, Jedi, people unplugged from the Matrix, crew members from the Enterprise and Hogwarts students abound.

It was geek heaven, I tell you. Honestly! Almost all my fandoms were there (except, of course, West Wing and Roswell), and a lot of them were in costume. The X-Files and Buffy booths had the members showing off their collected stuff like tapes, videos, magazines and video games. Some of them were selling merchandise like buttons. The LOTR booth got the loot, I think. The members had a bookcase with their LOTR books, some artsy people made the Gondor banner, the Rohan banner and the white hand of Sauron. And some enterprising soul made a profit out of Dakki pillows and shirts. I saw a girl stitching together the banner Arwen was holding at the end of ROTK. Some of them bound fanfic and poems to form a paper-bound book for P200. Most of them were poems, so I really wasn't so into it.

Another highlight was meeting Rashbold, the only Filipino I've met whose command of Tolkien's elvish was so impressive I felt like I was in kindergarten compared to his knowledge and expertise. Holy. Cow. We had some interesting ten or fifteen minutes where he broke down his translation of the Matrix line: Don't think you can. Know you can." The discussion of which led to three pages of explanation on how the verbs were conjugated, the Quenya was sourced and changed (because the sentence was in Sindarin), along with the appropriate negation and umlauts.

I was really, really fun to have finally met the guy. I think thirty percent of the time he was explaining things to me, I understood, and the rest I was trying to catch up. But he was very patient and enthusiastic in telling me how it came about, and even was nice enough to answer my (very) newbie questions.

Another high moment there was when there were a group of people who went all out in costume. Some notable characters:

Sauron and the Nazgul posse. Sauron, the Witch-King in ROTK, and a Nazgul from Weathertop. Wow, the detail and attention that Sauron guy did with his costume! The moment he stepped out from the changing tent, people wanted to take pictures with him. And it was even more remarkable because he was so tall. He was a tall guy, I think 6 feet. Then the two Nazgul were about 5'5" I think, so they were proportionate. They walked around with a girl who was Arwen (in the red dress in ROTK), Aragorn in the Gondorian army costume (the cleaned-up Aragorn in the end. In fairness, the kid who wore that costume was kinda cute too), Frodo (complete with hairy feet. Seriously)

Another cool character was the guy who walked around with a Matrix APU. You know the thing that Captain Mufune was wearing? That robot thing? Yeah. That robot thing. Some guy really went out and made the effort to make that thing. Amazing.

Just to give you an image in your head what the APU looks like:

I wished to God I had a camera. Honestly. There's no way I won't be part of that next year.

So. Sauron and posse were walking the area, right? People wanted to take pictures. Then they turned the corner to where the APU was at.

Can you imagine the scene? The APU guy suddenly raised his arms as if to shoot them down, and Sauron raised his staff thing.

And people simply went crazy. Cameras popped out from nowhere to take pictures.

Geek heaven, I tell you.

The Hogwarts booth was filled with people in Hogwarts costumes, pointy hats.. even Gryffindor Quidditch robes. There was a class/ game going on, on Harry Potter trivia. They had a collection of fanfic for reading.

Later on that night, I saw a guy walk past me in Hogwarts robes, walking like he was late. He was about my age, was wearing a sort-of disheveled uniform, with glasses and my jaw just dropped to the floor: Ryan Agoncillo, ladies and gentlemen, the Pinoy Potter. *dies*

Seriously. He looked SO like Harry Potter (not Dan Radcliffe): rumpled hair close to curling at the nape, glasses (sigh), disheveled uniform.

Some people walked around as crew members of the Enterprise. Color-coded uniforms to signify Command, Science, Tech, Medical, etc etc. They were selling comm badges and mugs.

The Matrix guys (and girls) were (as expected) all in black and suits. What I like about them is that they actually made a video entitled <>"The Real Juan", a Matrix-themed story about a girl who thought she, instead of Trinity, should get The Real Juan. Very cool. I regret that I didn't buy a vid. But the mod of one of the philo boards I frequent was one of the members of the Matrix group, so I can buy myself a copy anytime.

Aside from being costume-envy with the LOTR guys, I wanted, really wanted to be a Jedi. With a lightsaber. A lot of Jedi walking around, I must say. And Darth Maul too. I have to say that these guys really put out for their costumes.

And I thought I'd have to go to another country to be part of this kind of fandom. Philippine Comic Con, here I come. I'm definitely going to next year's.

2. Watched ROTK for the fourth time in the theaters.

I went to the Comic Con with Sapper, one of the guys I've met at Klite. He's more of a old school comic guy (ie The Fantastic Four, the Green Lantern, etc), and a Trekkie, so he wanted to see those booths). I had gotten off work at eleven in the morning, so I just went to Rockwell straight from work and met up with him.

When we got tired walking around, we went to watch ROTK. He hasn't watched it yet, and I was happy to accomodate him.

Not enough words to describe the movie.

3. West Wing!

Arctic Radar. Donna trying to make moves on Jack Reese. Donna trying to get Josh to play interference for her. Josh trying to play matchmaker, but ends up giving mixed signals with Jack Reese, who immediately tells him, "Look, I don't want to get in the way of anything.."

Oh please, jump each other already!

4. Bought a Books Of Magic graphic novel.

Following the story of Tim Hunter, the Boy Who Lived, in Gaiman's Books of Magic series. His own version of Potter. Adult, and much much richer. I admit it was an impulse buy. I couldn't resist. I'm thinking of getting me two graphic novels the next time around. The first one on the Furies (again from the Sandman universe), and another which deals with space travel and astronomy.

5. Bought the latest installment of the Roman Mysteries.

The adventures of Flavia Gemina and her friends continue. I love this series. I wish I had read it when I was twelve. Instead, I buy it at twenty-three and don't stop until I've finished reading the thing through. Makes me feel nostalgic about my childhood waiting for the next installment to the Sweet Valley series.

Although this series is in no way in the same neighborhood, or even the shelf space of Sweet Valley. Just that the feeling of anticipation's the same. But this is better. It's a well-written children's, and young adult's series set in (realistic) Roman times.

6. Went to mass.

Always a highlight of the week.

7. Had confession.

Always a bright spot. :D

Low points:

1. Had an existential crisis over cinnamon rolls and mocha soul.

I fully intended to sit awhile and write stuff, maybe to add to the fic. I pulled up a sheet of yellow pad, and I started writing. The prose version of Why Georgia. Not as beautifully worded, but.. everything's there.

It's scary. It's scary to know you can be anything you want. Literally. It's like I'm torn in fifteen different directions, different paths, different beacons of light.

2. Theresa's boyfriend broke up with her.

Over the phone. Long distance.

If that isn't a guy without balls, then what is? Fuck him. Fuck him for messing with my girl. I hope he wipes down tables at Taco Bell for the rest of his life. Enjoy your life out there in California, you dipshit. Screw you for hurting my friend. For making her feel so vulnerable. For making her feel worthless. Fuck you. Die, Ronald. Die. And here I was starting to think you may be worthy of the gift that is my friend, but at this point, I hope you never come across me in the future. I'm bound to take a swing.

Fucking coward.
